My Friend, You Have a Gift: Playing Slack Key Guitar for Konrad

The most meaningful support in life rarely announces itself ahead of time. It tends to find you, quietly, through people you barely know yet.

I met Konrad through my wife’s outrigger canoe paddling community. He was diagnosed with cancer last spring, and by late summer he was gone. Somewhere in those few months, a group from the paddling community went to visit him in the hospital, and I was part of that group. I brought my guitar, in case he wanted some music. He did.

I sat at his bedside and played slack-key Hawaiian music, the kind of music meant to be felt as much as heard. When I finished, he asked me to come closer. He placed his hands on my head and pulled me forehead to forehead, then said, in a voice that had grown weak, “My friend, you have a gift. I could die listening to this. Thank you.”

It took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes, and I was not the only one in the room who felt it.

I have carried that moment with me ever since, and I will treasure the deep impression Konrad left for the rest of my life. It is the clearest example I have of what live therapeutic music can offer, a musician physically present, able to read the room and respond to it, able to be there in a way nothing recorded ever could.

Last week, I was back at the studio to record the voiceover for the Acoustic Healing trailer. I felt real anticipation beforehand, the kind that shows up when something actually matters. Before I started, I clipped a small sticker to my script, a tribute logo Konrad’s outrigger canoe paddling community created in his honor. It sat there with me through the whole session, a quiet reminder of why I do this work.

Thank you, Konrad.
